Self-organising work groups ('Open Space Technology')

This section holds info about the 'Open Space Technology' (OST)  method of conference planning and facilitation.

OST might have been a useful method for day 2 (if not too late) because it enables work groups to 'self-organise',  it only needs one facilitator for the whole day, and it resolves timetable clashes without much fuss and without  any session having to be repeated.

The method's proponents (of whom I'm one, KM) claim it is a good way of engaging peple's creativity and initiative, whereas conferences that are too top-down-planned inhibit intitative.

Essentially, the timetable for the day (including the number of workshops and the topic of each) is set ON the day, in a structured plenary session led by a facilitor who is experienced in the method (and who is therefore confident that it will work, despite participants' inititial scepticism).

It is perhaps too late to consider using this method for the conference on 1/2 September. (It wouldn't be too  late if people really wanted to do it, but I doubt they will, and as a troublesome newcomer to the conference steering group I'm content to be overuled on this. KM).

The info is posted here in case useful in future. Maybe for a follow-up event?  Maybe an online version?

The wikipedia article provides a good overview:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Space_Technology
